How do Steel Blue, French Blue and Sapphire Blue part ways?
Blue is the plain center of its family. The other four are blue with one dial turned.
All five sit at medium lightness, so the differences are small steps. From lightest to darkest: Steel Blue, French Blue, Ocean Blue, Blue, Sapphire Blue. By intensity the order shifts. Blue is vivid and the loudest of the five. French Blue and Sapphire Blue come next, then Steel Blue, and Ocean Blue is the quietest.
None of them pulls toward another hue. On the color wheel, blue sits opposite orange, which is partly why warm neutrals like camel rest so easily beside it.
Treat each name as a neighborhood, not an address. Weave, dye and store lighting all push a blue a few steps either way.
Where does blue land in your palette: in it, next to it or out?
Three sub-seasons keep blue. Bright Spring wears the vivid Blue itself, matched with Bright Royal Blue, because its palette is very bright and high in contrast. Cool Summer takes Ocean Blue, the quietest of the five. Soft Summer takes Ocean Blue too, matched with Slate Blue, a grayed blue for a very soft palette.
Seven have a neighbor of it, not the color itself. Deep Winter wears Blue near Royal Blue, with Pure White and Cool Eggplant beside it. Deep Autumn wears Sapphire Blue near Peacock Blue, a dark blue for a dark palette. Soft Autumn and Light Summer both take Steel Blue, near Warm Denim and Light Denim Blue, quieter blues for low contrast.
Two are not for you: Light Spring and Warm Autumn. Their palettes hold no blue that reads like these.
How do you build a blue outfit with one neutral and one accent?
Start with the shade. Sapphire Blue is the deepest of the five and carries more weight under the chin. Vivid Blue pulls the eye first. Steel Blue and Ocean Blue are the quiet ones. Choose by how much attention you want near your face.
Then put something between the blue and your skin. A cream or white layer at the neckline does it. My advice: pick that layer before you pick the blue.
Lower down, blue asks less. Let camel or light gray carry the base, and give the accent one place only, such as a mustard scarf or olive pants. The outfits shown on this page follow that logic. A fourth is easy to build: blue pants, a cream top, a camel coat. Two accents at once is where it goes wrong.

Questions
Blue: your questions
What color shirt goes with blue pants?
Cream or white. Both give blue pants a clean, light top without competing. Cream reads softer, white crisper. For an accent, try mustard. Keep one neutral and one accent, and let the pants stay the quiet part of the outfit.
Does blue go with navy?
Not well. Navy and blue are close in tone, so they melt into one block with no edge between them. If you want two blues in one look, separate them with a layer of white or cream, or leave one of them out.
Which version of blue is mine?
Check the sub-season sections above: Steel Blue, Ocean Blue, Sapphire Blue or the vivid Blue. Not sure of yours? The free color analysis quiz asks ten questions and ends with a likely season and a pointer toward your sub-season. Treat it as a starting point; only colors held near your face settle it.
Can I wear blue if it’s not in my palette?
Yes, lower on the body: pants, a skirt, shoes. Up top, put a layer from your own palette between the blue and your face, or wear your closest palette color instead. The color stays in your wardrobe. Only its place changes.
Does blue go with green?
Yes, if the green is olive, one of blue’s partners. Keep the olive low, in pants or a jacket, and the blue up top. Turquoise, which sits between blue and green, is the one to skip, because the two strong colors compete.
