What Colors Go With Teal? Five Shades and Your Version

Is teal green or blue? The five shades of the family

Teal sits between blue and green on the color wheel. Some of its shades lean to the green side, others to the blue.

Teal, Dark Cyan and Pine Green are blue-green. Teal Blue and Cadet Blue lean plainly blue. All five are medium in lightness, so the gaps are small. Cadet Blue is the lightest of them and Pine Green the darkest, with Teal and Dark Cyan in the middle.

Intensity separates them more clearly. Dark Cyan is the most intense, Pine Green follows, and Cadet Blue is the most muted. Next to a face, that muted end looks calm and the intense end looks decided.

A color name isn’t one exact code. Dye, fabric and the bulb overhead all shift it, so the teal you saw in the store can look different at home.

Why does one teal land in eight palettes and miss one?

Because the five shades cover a wide stretch of temperature and intensity, and each sub-season takes the part that matches its own axes.

Pine Green belongs to Deep Autumn, which is dark, rich and high in contrast. Its palette match is Deep Turquoise.

Soft Summer is very soft and grayed, so it wears Cadet Blue, the most muted shade, matched with Grayed Turquoise.

Soft Autumn wears Teal Blue, matched with Soft Petrol Blue. Warm Autumn wears Dark Cyan, matched with Warm Turquoise.

Warm Spring takes Dark Cyan too, matched with Deep Turquoise. Deep Winter wears Teal itself. Cool Summer and True Winter both wear Cadet Blue, matched with Cool Turquoise. That makes eight in all.

Three sub-seasons have only a neighbor: Light Spring, Bright Spring and Bright Winter. Their palettes hold a turquoise, a touch paler or brighter than the shade in your hand. Cadet Blue comes closest.

Light Summer is the one outlier. It is very light and soft, and nothing in its palette matches teal. The nearest color in its palette is Seafoam Green, a substitute rather than a twin.

How do you build around teal, at the neckline and below?

Choose the shade first. A deeper one such as Pine Green holds more weight under the chin. A muted one such as Cadet Blue keeps the face in front.

If the teal feels heavy, put cream or white between it and your skin. A shirt collar or a light top does it cleanly. Charcoal and camel work lower down, as the quiet base that lets the teal stay the one strong color.

The logic of a good outfit is one neutral and one accent. Teal can be either, depending on how much of it you wear.

For a fourth outfit, take mustard or coral as the accent and keep the rest in cream or camel. Keep the accent small, or the two colors compete.

Which pairings blur teal, and what does Light Summer reach for?

Two pairings flatten it. Turquoise sits so near teal that the two merge into one patch. Forest green leaves the outfit flat, with nothing to set one green from the other.

If your verdict is “not for you”, you haven’t lost the color. Wear it away from the face, in pants, a skirt or a bag. For Light Summer, the stand-in near the face is Seafoam Green, with Soft Navy or Light Raspberry beside it.

If your verdict is “close”, look for the neighbor named in your palette and start there. A teal worn lower down costs you nothing.

Questions

Teal: your questions

Which neutral and which accent sit best beside teal?

Cream and white are the calmest. Mustard and coral give contrast, camel adds warmth and charcoal gives a deep, quiet base. Pick one neutral and one accent, then let the teal lead. Skip turquoise and forest green, which crowd it.

Can I wear teal and turquoise in the same outfit?

I wouldn’t. The two sit too close in tone, so they blur into one patch and neither stands out. If you’re torn between them, the teal vs turquoise comparison shows which one belongs to each sub-season. Keep one at the face and let a neutral carry the rest.

Which of the five teals is mine?

Your sub-season decides, and the sub-season cards on this page show each version. If you don’t know yours yet, the free color analysis quiz gives you a first guess at your season and a lean toward a sub-season. It is a starting point, not a ruling.

Where does teal go if my palette says no?

Away from the face. Wear it lower down, in pants or a skirt, and keep a color from your palette at the neckline. If your sub-season has a close neighbor, such as a turquoise, try that near your face first.

What do I wear with teal and jeans?

Denim blue jeans and white sneakers work well under a teal sweater. White does the job of lifting the color, and the denim stays in the same cool family. Add a camel coat when it turns cold.

Where can I find more color pairings?

The hub of color guides gathers a page of pairings for each color, plus comparisons of two colors that sit close together. Each page lists the shades of its color, its partners and the version that each of the twelve sub-seasons wears.
