What it means to be a Spring

If you’re a Spring, you often feel it before you know it.

Black looks harsh on you. Gray drains you. And the minute you hold a coral or a soft green up to your face, someone asks if you just got back from vacation.

The Spring season is for people who look best in colors that are warm, light and bright. Colors with sunshine in them, never heavy.

It’s the most delicate of the two warm seasons: where Autumn can carry depth and muted shades, Spring needs clarity and freshness.

Signs you may be a Spring

  • A warm or neutral-warm undertone: gold looks better on you than silver.
  • An overall impression of lightness and glow, no matter how tan you are.
  • Low to moderate natural contrast between your skin, eyes and hair.
  • Dark, muted colors sit on top of you: people see the clothes before they see you.

Colors Springs should avoid (and how to wear them anyway)

Colors to keep away from your face

Solid black, charcoal gray, burgundy and any very muted or very cool color near your face. They dim your natural light.

Nothing is off-limits. If you love one of these, wear it away from your face: pants, a skirt, shoes or a bag.

Spring jewelry and metals

Yellow gold, light rose gold, shiny gold tones. Light, luminous stones: turquoise, coral, peridot.

The 3 sub-seasons

Spring or Autumn: the two-color test

CoralSpring
RustAutumn

The two-color test. In daylight, with no makeup, hold a piece of fabric in each of these two colors up to your face. If the coral wakes up your complexion and the rust weighs you down, you lean Spring.

Can’t see the difference? That’s common: we all see through our own taste. Read the Autumn page too, or let the quiz give you a first hint.

Questions

Spring color season: your questions

How do I know if I’m a Spring or an Autumn?

Both seasons are warm. The difference comes down to lightness and saturation: Spring looks best in light, bright colors, Autumn in deeper, more muted ones. Hold a bright coral and then a rust up to your face, bare-faced, in daylight. Whichever one evens out your complexion gives you the answer.

Can a brunette be a Spring?

Yes. Hair color alone never rules out a season. What matters is how your skin reacts to colors. A brunette with golden tones and a luminous complexion can absolutely be a Warm Spring or a Bright Spring.

Is black off-limits if you’re a Spring?

Nothing is off-limits. But black near your face is the hardest color for a Spring. Save it for the bottom half of your outfit, or swap it for a warm navy, a light chocolate or a camel.

What are the main Spring colors?

Coral, Peach, Sunshine Yellow, Meadow Green, Pear Green, Warm Turquoise, Lagoon Blue and Light Camel. Each of the three sub-seasons has its own version of this palette.

What colors should a Spring avoid?

Solid black, charcoal gray, burgundy and any very muted or very cool color near your face. They dim your natural light. Nothing is off-limits: if you love one of them, wear it away from your face.

Gold or silver: which metals suit a Spring?

Yellow gold, light rose gold, shiny gold tones. Light, luminous stones: turquoise, coral, peridot.

What lipstick colors suit a Spring?

Light Spring: Peach, light coral, salmon pink. Light, glossy formulas rather than matte, dark ones. Warm Spring: Coral, poppy red, rich peach. Orange-leaning reds are your reds. Bright Spring: Tomato red, bright coral, watermelon pink. You can pull off a bold lip.
