What Colors Go With Ivory? Four Shades, Twelve Sub-Seasons

You hold an ivory sweater up to the window, then a stark white one. The white arrives first. The ivory waits. It lets you speak.

What is in the ivory family, and how far apart are its four shades?

Ivory, Old Lace, Eggshell and Alabaster sit side by side, barely tinted. The differences are small, and small is the point.

Ivory and Eggshell lean yellow. Old Lace leans toward orange. Alabaster has no clear hue at all.

By lightness the order runs Ivory, Old Lace, Alabaster, Eggshell. By intensity it runs Eggshell, Ivory, Old Lace, Alabaster, so Eggshell carries the most color and Alabaster the least.

A color name isn’t one code. Fabric, dye and the bulb above you all move an ivory, so two garments sold as ivory can differ.

Which ivory goes with which sub-season, and what decides it?

All twelve sub-seasons have an ivory in their palette. Nothing here is close or not for you. What changes is the shade, and the palette color it sits beside.

Light Spring is slightly warm and very light, with low contrast. It wears Ivory itself, matched with Ivory, beside Warm Light Gray and Light Cornflower.

Warm Autumn is very warm and rich. It takes Eggshell, the most intense of the four and one that leans yellow, matched with Cream, with Khaki and Cinnamon beside it. Soft Autumn and Deep Autumn wear Eggshell too.

Then the cooler ones. Soft Summer is neutral to cool and grayed, so it takes Alabaster, matched with Off-White, beside Grayed Navy and Washed Denim. Deep Winter is neutral to cool as well and takes Alabaster too, matched with Pure White, beside Black and Plum. The cooler the sub-season, the less its ivory needs to lean yellow.

Light Summer, Cool Summer, True Winter and Bright Winter all wear Alabaster as well. Bright Spring is the odd one: Old Lace, matched with Warm Off-White.

Where does ivory belong: against your face or lower down?

Ivory is very light, so the edge between it and your face does a lot of work. Put a deeper partner in that gap. A burgundy cardigan open over an ivory top, or a camel scarf over an ivory coat, gives the eye a line to follow.

Eggshell carries the most color of the four, Alabaster the least. If yours is Alabaster, try a stronger neighbor at the collar and see whether your face comes forward.

Away from the face, ivory needs a base. Navy or black pants under an ivory top make a clean split between light and dark. The three outfits above all follow one rule: a single neutral, a single accent, ivory in between.

Build a fourth the same way. An ivory knit, a sage green skirt and gold at the ears gives you one soft color and one metal. Take a step back from the mirror before you add a third.

What should you skip with ivory, and what if you doubt yours?

Keep white and cream out of the same outfit. They’re so near ivory in tone that the three melt together and the quiet of ivory is gone.

This is a rule for one outfit, not for your palette. Your palette may well list Cream or Pure White as the match for your ivory. Wear them on different days, or keep a darker piece between them.

No sub-season gets a “not for you” here, so there’s no stand-in to hunt for. If an ivory looks flat on you, don’t give up on the color. Try the next shade in the family. Answer ten questions in the free color analysis quiz, no sign-up, and you get a guess at your season with a nudge toward the sub-season. Treat it as a pointer.

Questions

Ivory: your questions

Does an ivory top look right under a black jacket?

Yes. Black is a partner of ivory, and the palettes of Deep Winter, True Winter and Bright Winter list Black beside their Pure White match. Keep the ivory nearer your face and the black lower, so the pale piece reads as light, not as a gap.

Which ivory is mine?

Each sub-season wears one of four shades: Ivory, Old Lace, Eggshell or Alabaster. If you don’t know yours yet, start with the free quiz, then compare two shades under your chin in daylight and see which one lets your face come forward.

Can I wear ivory and white together?

Pick one per outfit. Side by side, the two have almost no gap between them, and the pale shape loses its edges. The ivory versus white comparison sorts the two by sub-season. Wear them on different days instead.

Where does ivory end and cream begin?

They’re neighbors, not twins. For Warm Spring, Soft Autumn, Warm Autumn and Deep Autumn, the palette color matched with the ivory is called Cream, so the line is thin. Worn together, they lose their edges. Ivory versus cream compares them by sub-season.

What do I wear with ivory and jeans?

Denim blue jeans work, and an ivory sweater above them keeps things easy. Camel boots add a warm line at the bottom. If you want something deeper near your face, a burgundy scarf does it without crowding the ivory.
