How far apart are the five beiges?
Five shades, from lightest to darkest: Linen, Wheat, Desert Sand, Beige and Sand.
Linen is nearly neutral, with no clear hue.
Wheat and Desert Sand are very light too. Wheat leans orange, Desert Sand a little further toward red-orange. Beige itself is light and muted, also orange.
Sand breaks the pattern. It’s the darkest of the five, the most intense, and the only one that leans yellow. Order them by intensity and the list almost reverses: Sand, Wheat, Desert Sand, Beige, Linen.
A name doesn’t pin down one exact color. Dye, fabric and the lighting in the room can all move it, so two sweaters sold as beige can sit at opposite ends of this family.
Which sub-seasons wear beige, and why is it never the same one?
Eleven sub-seasons have a version of beige in their palette. Only Deep Winter doesn’t.
Soft Autumn is the only one that wears Beige itself, matched with Sand Beige. Its colors are soft, desaturated and low to moderate in contrast, so a muted, light beige sits quietly there. Chestnut and Light Terracotta go with it.
Wheat, a very light muted orange, is the version of four others. Light Spring matches it to Golden Beige, with Light Cornflower beside it. Warm Spring matches it to Golden Ivory. Warm Autumn and Deep Autumn both match it to Cream: Khaki and Cinnamon for one, Dark Khaki and Spiced Orange for the other.
The rest take Linen, the nearly neutral one: Bright Spring, the three Summers, True Winter and Bright Winter. Bright Spring matches it to Warm Off-White, Light Summer to Soft White, Soft Summer to Off-White. True Winter matches it to Pure White, with Black and Magenta.
On the axes these sub-seasons have little in common. Bright Spring and Bright Winter are very bright, Light Summer is very light, Soft Summer is very soft, Cool Summer and True Winter are very cool. What they share is the color closest to Linen in each palette: a white or an off-white.
How do you keep beige from blending into your face?
Beige is light and muted, and that’s where the trouble starts. At the neckline, the wrong beige can blur into your skin, and the sweater takes over before the face does.
Put something with a clear edge between it and your chin. White does it cleanly. Baby pink does it with warmth. Or choose a deeper shade, where your sub-season allows one.
Hold two versions under your chin, one at a time, by a window. If one of them makes your eyes look tired, you have your answer.
Then think in two pieces: one neutral, one accent. Navy or chocolate gives the base. Olive gives the accent.
A beige sweater, olive pants and a chocolate jacket is a fourth outfit, built the same way as the ones above. Below the waist, beige asks for very little.
What should you skip with beige, and what does Deep Winter wear?
Skip cream and skip sand next to beige. Both pairings are soft and pale on each side, so the outfit goes flat and nothing leads the eye. If you want a light second color, make it white.
Deep Winter is the one verdict that says no. Beige sits close to Golden Beige, which this sub-season avoids. The closest color in its palette is Pure White, a stand-in and not a match, and Black and Plum go with it.
A Deep Winter palette is dark, saturated and high in contrast, so a pale muted beige has little to hold on to. If you still want beige, that’s your call: keep it far from the face, in pants or a coat, and let Pure White sit at the neckline.

Questions
Beige: your questions
Does beige go with black?
Yes, black is one of beige’s partners. A beige dress with a black jacket and black heels is the evening outfit above. Whether black belongs near your face depends on your sub-season, so keep it in the jacket and shoes, and let something lighter touch the neckline.
What should sit between beige and my face?
White is the cleanest choice. A white blouse next to a beige blazer, with navy pants, makes a sharp office outfit. The white separates the beige from your face, so it doesn’t blur. For the sub-seasons that wear Linen, the closest color in their palette is a white or an off-white.
Which beige is mine?
Soft Autumn wears Beige itself. Others wear Wheat or Linen. Not sure which sub-season you are? The free color analysis quiz asks ten questions and points toward a season and a sub-season. It’s a first hint, nothing more, so check the result against the fabric itself.
Can I still wear beige when my palette doesn’t list it?
Yes. Put it in a coat, pants or a bag, well below the chin. Near the face, reach for the color your sub-season does list, shown on its card above. Distance is what makes the difference, and it’s free.
Is beige the same as cream?
No, though the two sit close: both are soft and pale, which is why the pairing goes flat. To see the gap and which one each sub-season takes, read beige or cream. The taupe or beige comparison does the same for taupe.
