Is purple one color, or five shades from Medium Purple to Purple?

It’s a family that runs across the color wheel from blue to pink-purple. Medium Purple and Royal Purple lean blue. Amethyst and Grape lean violet. Purple, the shade that carries the family name, leans pink-purple.

Depth is the next split. From lightest to darkest: Medium Purple, Amethyst, Royal Purple, Grape, Purple. The last two are dark and vivid, which is why they take over a neckline. Royal Purple is the quiet one, medium in depth and the least intense of the five. Grape is the most intense.

A name on a tag isn’t a single color. The same word covers different dyes, and shop lighting bends them further, so check the real piece against your face.

What puts purple in three palettes and leaves five without it?

Intensity, mostly. Three sub-seasons hold purple outright: Warm Spring, Bright Spring and True Winter. Warm Spring wears Amethyst, matched with Warm Violet. Bright Spring and True Winter both wear Grape, matched with Bright Violet and Violet. Their palettes are bright or saturated, and Grape is the most intense shade of the family.

Four more have a neighbor. Light Summer and Cool Summer both hold Mauve, so they wear Medium Purple and Amethyst, a step from their own color. Deep Winter wears Purple, close to its Deep Violet. Bright Winter wears Grape, close to Bright Violet.

Five have no match: Light Spring, Soft Summer, Soft Autumn, Warm Autumn and Deep Autumn. Soft Summer and Soft Autumn are very soft in intensity, and a vivid purple outshouts them. Warm Autumn and Deep Autumn run rich and warm-leaning, and their closest colors are Warm Eggplant and Eggplant.

How much purple can sit under your chin before it needs a lighter layer?

Less than you’d think, when the shade is deep. Grape and Purple pull the eye before the face does. Amethyst and Medium Purple are medium in depth and leave more room.

Hold the piece under your chin and see who speaks first, your face or the sweater. If it’s the sweater, slide something lighter between the two: a cream top, a light gray scarf, a pale collar.

Lower down, purple asks for less. Let a neutral carry the outfit, charcoal or camel, and let purple be the single accent. That’s the logic behind every outfit above. To build a fourth, take a purple top, olive pants and a camel coat. Mustard works as a small touch, far from the face.

Why do orange and hot pink fight purple, and what do the five without it wear?

Purple is already vivid. Add orange or hot pink and you have two loud colors on one stage, and the eye keeps jumping between them. Keep one of the three quiet and the outfit settles.

If your sub-season is on the “not for you” side, the closest palette color is a stand-in, not a match. Light Spring has Light Violet, with Ivory and Almond Green beside it. Soft Summer has Smoky Blue, with Off-White and Tea Rose. Soft Autumn has Warm Denim, with Cream and Rosy Beige.

Warm Autumn has Warm Eggplant, with Cream and Warm Turquoise. Deep Autumn has Eggplant, with Cream and Bottle Green.

A purple that isn’t in your palette can still live in your wardrobe. Wear it away from your face, in pants, a skirt or a bag, and keep the stand-in near your collar.

Questions

Purple: your questions

Which version of purple is mine?

It depends on your sub-season, and the cards above show each one. If you don’t know yours yet, the free color analysis quiz gives you a likely season and a sub-season hint. Treat it as a first hint, not a verdict, then hold the shades near your face to confirm.

Can I wear purple if it isn’t in my palette?

Yes. Keep it away from your face: a skirt, pants, a coat or a bag. Then put your stand-in color, or a cream or gray from your palette, at the neckline. The face stays clear and the purple still does its job lower down.

Does purple go with orange or hot pink?

Rarely. Each of them is as strong as purple, so none gives way, and the outfit feels loud rather than rich. If you love one of the two, shrink it to a thin accent and let a quiet neutral take the rest of the space.

Is purple the same as violet?

Not quite. In this family, Amethyst and Grape lean violet, while Purple leans pink-purple. The purple or violet comparison sets the two side by side for each sub-season, so you can see which one is closer to yours.
