What Colors Go With White? Five Whites and Which Is Yours

“White goes with everything.” Everyone says so. It doesn’t. White is a color too, and held near a face it picks a side.

What is in the white family, and what sets the five apart?

Five shades: White, Snow, Floral White, Ghost White and Antique White. All five are very light and nearly neutral, so none of them has the pull of a real color.

That’s why the differences are small and easy to miss. Only Antique White carries a hue, a trace of orange. The other four have no clear hue and sit outside the color wheel’s usual reds, blues and greens.

By lightness, the order runs White, Snow, Floral White, Ghost White, Antique White. By intensity it runs the other way: Antique White is the most intense of the five and White the least. Intensity is how much color a shade carries, and here even the top of the scale is quiet.

A tag that says white tells you little. The dye, the fabric and the light in a fitting room can turn it into three different whites.

Why does the right white depend on your sub-season?

Because each sub-season has its own temperature, lightness, intensity and contrast, and a white that fits one of them can look stark or yellowed on another.

Ten sub-seasons have a white in their palette. None is merely close. Two are not for you.

Light Spring reads slightly warm and very light, with low contrast, and wears Antique White, matched with Ivory. Light Summer is just as light but slightly cool and soft, and it wears White, matched with Soft White. Soft Summer is neutral to cool and very soft, and it wears Floral White, matched with Off-White.

The Winters sit at the other end. Deep Winter, True Winter and Bright Winter all wear White, matched with Pure White. True Winter is very cool, Deep Winter and Bright Winter are neutral to cool, and contrast runs high to very high in all three. With Pure White, Deep Winter pairs black and plum.

Warm Autumn and Deep Autumn also wear Antique White, matched with Cream. Warm Autumn is very warm, medium in lightness and rich in color. Deep Autumn is dark and high in contrast. The trace of orange is what the two share.

How much white can you put close to your face?

Near the face, all five whites are very light, so what separates them is Antique White’s trace of orange. Hold it next to a plain white and watch what your skin does.

Whatever you choose, put a second color between the white and your face. A camel cardigan open over a white top does it. So does a denim blue shirt, or a baby pink scarf. White then frames the color instead of competing with it.

Away from the face, white is easy. Pants, a skirt, sneakers: wear the white that suits your sub-season, or any white you like.

Look at the outfits above: each pairs one neutral with one accent, and white stays quiet in the middle. To build a fourth, start with a white T-shirt and olive pants. Add one camel piece and stop.

What should you skip with white, and what if it isn’t your palette?

Skip two pairings. Ivory next to white is the trouble. Too close in tone, the pair blurs, and neither looks chosen. White with light gray fails differently. Both are soft and pale, and the outfit goes flat.

If your sub-season is Warm Spring or Soft Autumn, white sits close to Optic White, a color you avoid. The closest palette color is Cream, a stand-in, not a match. For Warm Spring, Cream goes with Deep Turquoise. For Soft Autumn, it goes with Chestnut and Soft Moss.

Wear white away from the face if you love it: a pair of pants, a pair of sneakers. The face is where the choice counts. Near it, hold two whites under your chin and see which one your skin answers.

Questions

White: your questions

What colors go with white?

Navy, black, camel, olive and denim blue all work, and baby pink adds a softer option. White is a neutral base, so the question is mostly which accent suits your palette. Pick one accent, keep the rest quiet, and check it near your face.

Is ivory the same as white?

No, and wearing them together is a pairing to skip: the two are too close in tone, so they blur. Which one is yours follows your sub-season, and Light Spring’s palette matches Antique White with Ivory. The ivory vs white comparison shows what each sub-season wears.

Which white is mine?

It follows your sub-season: Antique White for Light Spring, Warm Autumn and Deep Autumn, and White for the Winters. Not sure of yours? The free color analysis quiz gives you a likely season and a first hint of your sub-season, not a verdict.

Can I still wear white if my sub-season says no?

Yes, away from your face. Warm Spring and Soft Autumn can wear white pants or sneakers. Near the face, reach for Cream, the closest color in their palettes. It’s a stand-in, so hold it up and see how it feels.

Does white go with black?

Yes. Black is one of white’s partners, and a white dress under a black jacket, with gold heels, is one of the evening outfits. The three Winters list black next to their white, so the pair is most at home there. Take it as a direction, not a law.
