What Colors Go With Yellow? Pairings and Your Sub-Season Version

“Yellow is hard to wear.” Some yellows are. Others are the easiest color in your closet, and which is which depends on your sub-season.

Where does yellow sit, and how far do its four shades stray?

Yellow sits next to orange on the color wheel, with green on its other side. That position explains most of the trouble. Lean a little in either direction and you have a different color.

Pastel Yellow and Butter Yellow are the quiet pair. Both are very light and medium in intensity, and both stay squarely yellow. Yellow itself is also very light, but vivid, so it speaks louder than either. Maize is the one that moves: light, vivid and leaning orange.

By lightness, the order runs Pastel Yellow, Butter Yellow, Yellow, Maize. By intensity, it shuffles: Maize, Yellow, Pastel Yellow, Butter Yellow. And a tag that says “yellow” can land anywhere in this family once fabric, dye and the light in the room have had their say.

Why does Warm Spring wear Maize while True Winter wears Pastel Yellow?

Because the sub-seasons differ on temperature, lightness, intensity and contrast, and yellow answers to all four.

Light Spring runs very light with low contrast, so it takes Butter Yellow, matched with the same name in its palette. Warm Spring is very warm and bright. It wears Maize, matched with Sunshine Yellow, and the orange lean is exactly the point. Bright Spring is very bright with high contrast, so it takes Yellow itself, matched with Warm Lemon Yellow. Light Summer, slightly cool and soft, wears Butter Yellow too, matched with Pale Lemon.

The two cool Winters go icy. True Winter wears Pastel Yellow, matched with Icy Lemon. Bright Winter wears the same shade, matched with Icy Yellow.

Three Autumns come close without arriving. Soft Autumn and Warm Autumn wear Maize, with Soft Mustard and Saffron as the neighbors in their palettes. Deep Autumn wears Butter Yellow, with Cream as its neighbor.

How do you keep yellow from shouting at the neckline?

Choose the shade by how much attention you want at your face. Butter Yellow and Pastel Yellow stay calm up there. Yellow and Maize throw the most color upward, so they ask for company.

Put a calmer layer between the vivid shades and your skin. White or light gray does it cleanly. Hold the piece under your chin by a window and see whether your face brightens or flattens.

Then build the rest on one neutral. Navy gives the sharpest contrast, charcoal the heaviest. The logic of every good yellow outfit is the same: one neutral, one accent, and yellow is the accent.

A fourth outfit is easy to make. Try a yellow T-shirt under a light gray blazer, with denim blue jeans. My advice: if a shade feels loud, move it lower and let a quieter color sit near your face.

What spoils yellow, and what do Cool Summer, Soft Summer and Deep Winter wear?

Two pairings to skip. Orange sits so close to yellow in tone that the two blur into one patch, and Maize already leans that way. Hot pink is the opposite problem: two strong colors, and neither gives way.

Three sub-seasons are not for you here, and each has a reason. Cool Summer sits close to Golden Yellow, which it avoids. Soft Summer sits close to Bright Yellow, which it avoids. Deep Winter sits close to Mustard, which it avoids.

Their stand-ins are the closest colors in their palettes, not matches. Cool Summer reaches for Soft White, with Navy and Cool Periwinkle. Soft Summer reaches for Off-White, with Grayed Navy and Washed Denim. Deep Winter reaches for Pure White, with Black and Plum.

In my view, a yellow you love is worth wearing low, on pants or a skirt, where it can’t touch your face.

Questions

Yellow: your questions

Which yellow is mine?

Look up your sub-season in the shades above. If you don’t know it yet, the free color analysis quiz asks ten questions, needs no sign-up and ends on a probable season and a sub-season clue. It’s a first hint and never the last word, so confirm it with the yellow itself near your face.

Can I wear yellow if it isn’t in my palette?

Yes, away from the face. Yellow pants, a skirt or a bag sit far enough from your skin that they can’t tint it. Keep a light color from your own palette at the neckline and let the yellow work lower down.

What do I wear over a yellow blouse?

A navy blazer is the dependable answer: dark enough to settle the yellow, structured enough to look finished. A denim blue jacket does the same job in a looser mood. Either way, keep yellow as the only bright piece and the lower half neutral.

Is Butter Yellow the same as Pastel Yellow?

Both are very light and medium in intensity, and both read as yellow. Pastel Yellow is the lighter of the two and a little more intense. On a face the gap is small, so follow your sub-season: Butter Yellow for Light Spring and Light Summer, Pastel Yellow for True Winter and Bright Winter.
