What Colors Go With Dark Green? Partners and Your Version

You hold a dark green sweater up to the window. The tag says one thing. In your hand it looks nearly black, and your reflection can’t decide either.

Is Dark Green one color, or five greens that happen to be dark?

Five, and every one of them is dark. Dark Green, Forest Green, Spruce Green, Bottle Green and Evergreen all read as green on the color wheel.

What separates them is intensity, then depth. Dark Green is the only vivid one, and it’s also the lightest of the five. The other four are muted. Evergreen is the most intense of those four and the darkest of all. Spruce Green is the least intense.

A name on a tag stands for a range. Weave, dye and the light in the shop each move the green, so judge the piece in your hands, not the label.

Who has Dark Green in the palette, and who gets a stand-in?

Four sub-seasons have it: Warm Autumn, Deep Autumn, Deep Winter and True Winter. Eight don’t.

Warm Autumn wears Forest Green, matched with Warm Forest Green. Its palette is very warm and slightly muted, and Forest Green is a muted dark green. Cream and Lichen go with it there.

Deep Autumn wears Bottle Green, matched with Bottle Green itself. Dark, rich and high in contrast: this palette can carry a deep green. Cream and Eggplant sit beside it.

The two Winters both wear Spruce Green. Deep Winter’s match is Cool Bottle Green, with Pure White and Fuchsia. True Winter’s is Pine Green, with Pure White and Icy Pink.

The eight without it are the Light and Soft palettes, the Bright ones, Warm Spring and Cool Summer. Their colors are lighter, softer or more brilliant than a deep green.

How do you wear Dark Green so your face stays in front?

Put a lighter color between the green and you. Cream does it softly, light gray does it coolly, and either one stops the green from reading as a dark patch under your chin.

The shade matters too. The vivid Dark Green announces itself. The muted four recede, and Evergreen, the deepest, recedes most. Close to the face, pick the quieter ones.

Away from the face, the green can carry the outfit. The logic of the three looks above is one neutral and one accent. Make a fourth the same way: a Dark Green cardigan, a light gray top beneath it and a mustard scarf at the throat. Or swap in burgundy for something warmer and heavier.

Camel and chocolate belong lower down. Pants, boots and a coat give the green a ground to stand on.

What blurs Dark Green, and what do you wear if it isn’t yours?

Black and navy. Both sit too close to the green in tone, so the outfit melts into one dark mass and the green stops showing. If you want black or navy in the look, let a lighter layer break the line between them.

When your sub-season says no, the nearest palette color is a stand-in, not a match. Cool Summer has Soft Spruce Green, which goes with Soft White and Pink. Soft Summer has Grayed Spruce, with Off-White and Gray Lavender. Soft Autumn has Khaki, with Cream and Rosy Beige.

Light Spring, Warm Spring, Bright Spring, Light Summer and Bright Winter have nothing worth recommending. A color outside your palette still has a place: wear it in a skirt, a bag or boots, and keep your own colors at the face. For more pairings, the color guides go color by color.

Questions

Dark Green: your questions

What color shirt goes with dark green pants?

Cream is the first answer, light gray the second. Both are light enough to separate the shirt from the pants and calm enough to let the green lead. If you want an accent, mustard works too, and burgundy gives a warmer, heavier version.

Does dark green go with black?

It can, but they blur. The two are too close in tone, so the green loses its identity next to black. If black is your base, add a lighter piece between them, such as cream or light gray, and the green shows up again.

Which version of Dark Green is mine?

Warm Autumn takes Forest Green, Deep Autumn Bottle Green, Deep Winter and True Winter Spruce Green. Not sure where you stand? The free color analysis quiz points to a likely season and a sub-season. It points the way and can’t settle it.

Can I wear dark green if it isn’t in my palette?

Yes, away from your face. Pants, a skirt, boots or a bag carry it well. Near the face, use the stand-in your sub-season shows, or a partner such as cream or light gray as the layer that touches you.

Is dark green the same as forest green?

Not quite. Forest Green is one of five shades in the dark green family, and it’s muted. The shade called Dark Green is more intense than all of them. Warm Autumn wears Forest Green, but not every sub-season that wears a dark green wears that one.
