Is sage green one color, or a family of five?

It’s a family of muted greens, and most of them lean yellow.

Sage Green itself sits in the middle: medium in lightness, medium in intensity, yellow-green in hue.

Sage is the lightest of the five, muted and yellow. Laurel Green is light and muted too, but yellow-green. Dark Sea Green is light, muted and plainly green. Artichoke Green is the darkest, medium in lightness, muted and green.

Sage Green is the most intense of the five. The others are all muted, and Laurel Green is the least intense of them.

Names are loose. The same “sage” shifts with the dye, the weave and the light in the room, so trust the piece in your hand over the tag.

Why does the right sage green change from one sub-season to the next?

Because the axes of each palette pull the green in a different direction.

Four sub-seasons have a sage in their palette. Warm Spring is very warm and medium to light in depth, so it wears Sage, the lightest of the five and yellow in hue, matched with Light Khaki. Soft Summer and Soft Autumn are both very soft, so both take Laurel Green. Soft Summer’s match is Cool Sage, and Soft Autumn’s is Sage Green itself.

Warm Autumn is rich and slightly muted, and wears Artichoke Green, matched with Moss Green.

Six sub-seasons get a neighbor, not the color itself. Light Spring and Light Summer are both very light. Dark Sea Green is the version that comes closest, and a neighbor of it sits in each palette: Mint for Light Spring, Seafoam Green for Light Summer. For Cool Summer, Artichoke Green is the closest version, and the neighbor in its palette is Soft Spruce Green.

Deep Autumn is dark and rich. Artichoke Green, the darkest of the five, comes closest, and Dark Olive is the neighbor in its palette. Deep Winter and True Winter are saturated. For both, Artichoke Green is the closest version, and the neighbor in their palettes is Emerald.

The last two, Bright Spring and Bright Winter, are not for you, and both have it on the avoid list: Sage Green sits close to Grayed Beige, which each of them avoids.

How much weight can sage green carry at the neckline?

Put one clean color between the green and your skin.

Right at the collar, a muted green can sit flat. Don’t let it. An ivory top, a pale scarf or a shirt in a light neutral keeps the face in front. A blazer or a cardigan in sage then reads as a frame, not a mask.

The deeper shades behave differently from the lighter ones. Artichoke Green carries more weight at the neckline, so it likes a lighter layer under it. Sage and Laurel Green are lighter, so they can sit closer to the chin, especially if your palette is soft.

Away from the face, sage asks for little. Put it on pants, a skirt or a bag and let it work.

For a fourth outfit of your own, I’d start with a dark neutral for the base, then add one warm accent. A scarf or a belt in one warm color is enough. I’d keep to one accent, because the green gets lost among several.

Which greens crowd sage green, and what do Bright Spring and Bright Winter wear?

Skip the neighbors that blur it. Worn together in one outfit, Olive Green and Dark Sea Green sit too close to Sage Green in tone, so they melt into one flat patch. If you want two greens in an outfit, put real distance between them, in depth or in intensity.

If your sub-season is Bright Spring, the closest color in your palette is Light Emerald. For Bright Winter, it’s Bright Mint. Both are stand-ins, not matches.

If you love sage anyway, wear it below the waist and keep a color from your own palette near your face. The green becomes background.

Questions

Sage Green: your questions

What colors go with sage green?

Pale neutrals keep it clean, and a warm earthy tone gives it some life. A deep brown or a dark gray gives it weight. Keep the green as the quiet part and let a single accent do the talking.

Which of the five sage greens belongs to my sub-season?

Start from your sub-season’s axes, then hold the greens up one at a time. If the same one keeps brightening your face, you have your direction.

Is sage green still wearable if my sub-season says no?

Yes, away from the face. A skirt, pants or shoes in sage won’t reach your skin. Near the neckline, wear the stand-in from your own palette instead. Bright Spring’s is Light Emerald, and Bright Winter’s is Bright Mint.

What’s the difference between olive green and sage green?

Worn together, they blur, which is why they appear as a pairing to skip. Each sub-season also treats the two differently, so one may be in your palette while the other isn’t. Olive green versus sage green shows which of the two each sub-season takes.

Does sage green work for Deep Winter?

Only as a neighbor. Artichoke Green comes closest, and the Deep Winter palette holds Emerald nearby. Emerald goes with Pure White and Midnight Blue there. Since Deep Winter is dark and saturated, I’d keep the sage lower down.
