“Emerald green is just green.” Hold it near a face. It splits into four colors. Only some of them are yours.

Which greens count as emerald green, and what separates them?

Four shades make up the family: Emerald, Medium Sea Green, Illuminating Emerald and Sea Green. They all sit in green, except Illuminating Emerald, which leans toward blue-green.

By lightness, Emerald is the lightest, then Medium Sea Green, then Illuminating Emerald, with Sea Green at the deep end. Intensity runs in a different order. Emerald is the most vivid, Medium Sea Green comes next, then Sea Green. Illuminating Emerald is the quietest of the four.

That second order is the one to watch near a face. A vivid shade pulls the eye to itself. A quieter one lets your face lead.

The label won’t settle it. Dye, fabric and the bulb overhead all shift a green, so judge the piece in your hands.

Why does your emerald green change when your sub-season does?

Because each sub-season takes a different slice of the family, and the axes explain which.

Six keep emerald in their palette. Bright Winter runs very bright and very high in contrast, so it wears Medium Sea Green, matched with Bright Emerald. Warm Spring takes the same shade, matched with Parakeet Green.

Cool Summer is cool and softer, so it goes to Illuminating Emerald, the quietest of the four, matched with Soft Emerald. True Winter wears Sea Green, matched with Emerald.

Five sit one step off. Soft Summer, Soft Autumn and Deep Autumn wear Illuminating Emerald, but only a neighbor is in their palettes: Verdigris, Grayed Teal and Deep Turquoise. Deep Winter wears Sea Green, and the palette color it lines up with is Emerald: a close neighbor, not a twin.

The one that says no is Light Summer. Its palette is very light and soft, and nothing in it matches an emerald.

How do you wear emerald green at the collar, and below it?

Start with how loud you want it. Emerald, the most vivid shade, puts the green in front of your face. Illuminating Emerald, the quietest of the four, lets your face lead.

If the green overwhelms you, slide something pale between it and your skin. A white blouse does it crisply. A baby pink top does it softly. My advice: test the pale layer before you change the green.

Below the face, build with one neutral and one accent. Emerald is the accent. Navy or camel does the rest of the work, and black can too if it belongs to your palette. Gold stays small, a belt buckle or a shoe, so it doesn’t compete.

For a fourth outfit of your own, try an emerald knit, navy pants and a baby pink scarf. Hold the scarf at your chin and watch whether your eyes brighten or the green takes over.

What spoils emerald green, and what do you wear if it isn’t yours?

Two pairings to skip. Red first: two strong colors fight for the same attention, and neither gives way.

Forest green next. It sits too close in tone, so the two blur and the emerald loses its edge. If you’re weighing it against hunter green, the emerald green or hunter green comparison says which suits each sub-season.

Light Summer is the one sub-season that says no. Seafoam Green, the nearest color in its palette, stands in for emerald. It is not a match. Pair it with Soft Navy and Light Raspberry for the neckline.

In my view, a color outside your palette still has a place. Put the emerald on a hem or a handbag, below the collarbone, where it can’t tint your skin.

Not sure where you land? Ten questions in the free color analysis quiz give you a likely season and a sub-season hint. It’s a starting point. The pairings for other colors are there when you want more.

Questions

Emerald Green: your questions

Can I put black next to emerald green?

Yes, black is one of its partners, and the pair is strong and graphic. The palettes of True Winter and Bright Winter list black beside their emerald. For the other sub-seasons, keep the black lower down, away from your face.

How do I know which emerald green is mine?

Start from your sub-season: across the twelve, the version worn runs from Emerald to Sea Green. If you don’t know yours, the free color analysis quiz gives a likely season and a sub-season hint. Then try the shades by a window.

Where do I wear emerald green if my palette says no?

Yes. Wear it lower down, on a hem or a handbag. If you want a green at the neckline, borrow the nearest color of your palette as a stand-in. It won’t be the same green, but it will sit better on you.

Which top works with emerald green on a casual day?

An emerald sweater, denim blue jeans and white sneakers is a clean weekend look. The jeans act as the neutral, and the white lifts the green. Add a camel coat on top if white feels too sharp.

Why does emerald green blur next to forest green?

The two sit too close in tone, so they melt into one block and the emerald loses its edge. Pick one of them for the outfit and let a neutral such as white or navy take the other place.
