What Colors Go With Khaki? Partners and Your Sub-Season Version

What colors go with khaki? Start with the khaki itself. Four shades share the name, and the one your palette holds may not be the one hanging in the store.

What makes the four khakis different from each other?

Khaki sits between orange and yellow, with the color turned down. Three of its four shades lean yellow: Dark Khaki, Light Khaki and Dull Khaki. Plain Khaki is the one that leans orange.

The names mislead. Dark Khaki is the lightest of the four, and the most intense (intensity is how vivid a color is). Dull Khaki is the darkest. Khaki itself is the most muted of the family.

A tag that says khaki can mean any of these. Dye, weave and the lamp above you each shift it, so trust the piece in front of you over the label.

Whose khaki is it: Light Khaki, Dull Khaki or a stand-in?

Four keep khaki in the palette: Light Spring, Warm Spring, Soft Autumn and Warm Autumn. Warm Spring wears Light Khaki. Soft Autumn and Warm Autumn wear Dull Khaki. Light Spring wears plain Khaki, the one that leans orange.

Their depth and intensity differ, so that isn’t what joins them. Temperature does: all four lean warm, and khaki is a yellow-orange color turned down. Soft Autumn wears Dull Khaki, a muted version, because its palette is very soft.

Three sit one step away: Light Summer, Soft Summer and Deep Autumn. Their palettes hold a relative of khaki, a little paler, grayer or deeper. For Light Summer it’s Pale Lemon, for Soft Summer Pebble Gray, for Deep Autumn Bronze Green.

Five are not for you. Bright Spring avoids Dull Khaki itself, and True Winter avoids khaki itself. Deep Winter and Bright Winter sit close to colors they avoid, Golden Beige and Grayed Beige.

Cool Summer has nothing like it. That palette is very cool, and khaki leans warm, so the closest color there is only a stand-in.

How do you wear khaki near your face and away from it?

Khaki is a quiet color, and quiet colors can flatten a face when nothing lifts them. My advice: put a lighter partner between the khaki and your skin. White does it cleanly, and the white shirt in the office look is exactly that.

Then keep one neutral and one accent. Navy or charcoal is the neutral. Olive, burgundy or denim blue is the accent, and only one of them at a time.

Here is a fourth outfit from the same logic: khaki pants, a denim blue shirt and a charcoal blazer. Nothing competes, and the denim blue sits closest to your face.

Shade matters too. The lightest of the family, Dark Khaki, gives the most lift near the chin. Dull Khaki is the darkest and quietest to look at, so it works best lower down, in pants or a skirt.

What should you skip with khaki, and what if it isn’t yours?

Skip tan and beige. Tan sits so close to khaki in tone that the two blur into one patch. Beige is soft and pale like khaki, so the outfit goes flat. If you want to see the gap between khaki and beige, the khaki or beige comparison lays it out.

If your sub-season is among the five, don’t force khaki up by your face. Reach for the closest color in your own palette: Camel for Bright Spring, Emerald for Deep Winter, Icy Lemon for True Winter, Soft Spruce Green for Cool Summer, Icy Yellow for Bright Winter. They fill in for khaki. They don’t match it.

Away from the face, khaki can still go on the legs or at the hem. To see which group you’re in, the free color analysis quiz points you toward a season and a sub-season to check. Treat it as a starting point.

Questions

Khaki: your questions

What color shirt goes with khaki pants?

White is the safest. It sits between the khaki and your face, and navy over it finishes the look. Denim blue also works, with charcoal below or on top. Keep to one accent. If you add olive or burgundy, let the shirt stay quiet.

Which khaki is mine?

Look at the sub-season section above: each group has its own version, from Light Khaki to Dull Khaki. For a first pointer, the free color analysis quiz takes ten questions and no sign-up. It’s only a hint, because it never sees a fabric next to your face.

Can I wear khaki if it’s not in my palette?

Yes. Wear it away from your face, in pants, a skirt or a bag. Near the face, use the stand-in color your palette offers. For the four sub-seasons that avoid khaki or sit close to an avoided color, that stand-in matters most.

Does khaki go with olive?

Yes. Olive is one of its partners, and it works best as the single accent over a neutral base such as navy or charcoal. Add a white layer near the face, because khaki and olive are both quiet colors.

Is khaki the same as tan?

No. Tan is its own color, but the two weigh the same to the eye, so side by side neither one stands out. The khaki or tan comparison shows how to tell them apart and which sub-season takes which. Pick one and give it a contrasting partner.
