What Colors Go With Lavender? Shades, Pairings and Your Version

What goes with lavender? Almost anything quiet. The harder question is which lavender, because one name covers five shades and your sub-season picks one.

Is lavender blue, violet or pink-purple?

All three, depending on the shade. Lavender and Lavender Blue lean blue. Lilac and Thistle lean pink-purple.

Floral Lavender is the violet one, and the only vivid shade in the family. The other four are muted, which is why they read soft rather than loud.

Depth separates them too. Lavender Blue is the lightest, very light. Thistle comes next, then Lavender, then Lilac, all light. Floral Lavender is the deepest, at medium. Floral Lavender is also the most intense of the five, and Thistle is the most muted.

On the color wheel, lavender sits between blue and red, with its plainest shades leaning toward blue. A name on a tag isn’t one fixed color. The dye, the weave and the bulb above you all shift it.

Why does lavender sit in five palettes and miss four?

Light Spring, Light Summer, Cool Summer, Soft Summer and True Winter hold lavender in their palettes. That makes five of the twelve. Three more hold a neighbor, and four leave it out.

Light Summer is very light, soft and low in contrast. It wears plain Lavender, matched with Lavender in its own palette, beside Soft Navy and Pale Lemon. Soft Summer also wears Lavender, matched with Gray Lavender: its colors are very soft and grayed, so a muted lavender sits comfortably.

Cool Summer is very cool and moves up to Floral Lavender, matched with Mauve. True Winter is very cool and saturated, so it takes Lavender Blue, matched with Icy Lavender, with Navy and Pine Green beside it. Light Spring wears Lavender too, matched with Light Lilac.

The three close ones are neighbors, not matches. Warm Spring has Warm Violet, Bright Spring has Light Gray, and Bright Winter has Silver Gray. The four others come up below.

How do you keep lavender from going flat?

Give it a job. Lavender is a quiet color, and it does best when something else holds the outfit together.

Put a lighter or crisper color between lavender and your face: a white blouse under a lavender cardigan, or a cream layer. The edge it creates keeps a muted shade from melting into the skin. A deeper lavender needs that edge less, and Floral Lavender is vivid enough to be the only accent you need.

Then choose one neutral. Navy gives a crisp base, light gray a soft one. Sage green and mustard work as the accent. One is usually enough.

To build a fourth outfit, take a lavender sweater, navy pants and a sage green cardigan to carry over it. My advice: judge it by a window, not under a lamp.

What crowds a soft lavender, and where does it go when your palette refuses it?

Two pairings spoil it. Orange fights lavender: two strong colors, each asking for the eye. Baby pink goes the other way. Both are soft and pale, so the outfit goes flat and nothing leads.

Deep Autumn is the one with a reason: lavender lands close to Baby Pink, which that sub-season avoids. Soft Autumn gets Warm Denim as a stand-in, not a match, with Cream and Rosy Beige around it. Deep Winter’s closest color is Pure White, again a stand-in, with Black and Plum beside it.

Warm Autumn’s palette holds nothing like lavender. The nearest color is Cream, and that isn’t a swap worth making.

A color outside your palette can still live in your wardrobe. Keep your own colors at the neckline. Let lavender stay lower down, where it doesn’t touch your face.

Questions

Lavender: your questions

Does lavender go with white or light gray?

Yes, both. White gives lavender a clean edge, and light gray keeps it soft and calm. If you want contrast, white is the sharper choice. If you want a gentle, tone-on-tone outfit, light gray is easier to wear.

Which lavender is mine?

Check the twelve sub-seasons on this page, then test the guess. The free color analysis quiz points to a likely season and a first sub-season hint in ten questions, no sign-up. It’s a hint, not a verdict: it never sees your skin next to a color.

Can I still wear lavender when my palette leaves it out?

Yes, if it stays away from your face. A color outside your palette does less at a distance than under your chin. Keep your own colors at the neckline and let lavender sit lower. If your sub-season has a stand-in, wear that near the face instead.

Is lavender the same as mauve?

Not quite. Lavender’s plainest shades lean blue, and mauve is a color with its own page. The comparison of mauve and lavender tells you which of the two each sub-season picks, so you can choose before you buy. If you own both, hold them near your face one after the other.

What do I wear with lavender and jeans?

Keep lavender on top and let denim blue jeans act as the neutral. Add white sneakers or another white piece to brighten the look. One lavender item is plenty, so skip a second soft color.
