What Colors Go With Maroon? Your Version by Sub-Season

Maroon isn’t a neutral. It’s a dark red. It speaks first. Give it a partner between it and your face.

Four reds, no purple: what is in the maroon family?

Maroon is a family of four: Maroon itself, Dark Red, Barn Red and UP Maroon. All four sit on the red side of the color wheel. None leans toward purple.

What separates them is depth and force. Dark Red is the lightest of the four, then UP Maroon, then Maroon, and Barn Red is the darkest. Intensity runs in a different order. Dark Red is the most vivid, followed by Maroon, then Barn Red, and UP Maroon comes last.

That last point matters most. UP Maroon is the only one of the four with medium intensity. The other three are vivid, so they speak louder next to a face.

A color name covers a range, not a single color. Dye and fabric pull it one way, a lamp pulls it another, so the maroon on your screen won’t match the sweater in your hands.

Which sub-seasons can wear maroon near the face, and in which shade?

This is where the page earns its place, because the sub-seasons do not agree.

Only one has maroon in its palette. Deep Autumn wears UP Maroon, matched with Mahogany. The palette pairs it with Cream and Burnt Ochre.

The reason is depth. Deep Autumn is dark and neutral to warm, with high contrast, and a deep red like Mahogany sits at home in that palette.

Three have a neighbor of maroon, not maroon itself. Warm Autumn takes Dark Red, close to its Rust. Deep Winter takes UP Maroon, close to Cherry Red. True Winter takes UP Maroon too, close to Carmine.

Deep Winter is dark and True Winter is medium to dark. Both are saturated, with high contrast. Warm Autumn is very warm, and Rust is the color of its palette that sits closest.

Eight are not for you. Soft Summer is medium and very soft, grayed, and its closest color is Soft Burgundy, a stand-in and not a match. Soft Autumn is medium and very soft, desaturated, with Soft Eggplant as its stand-in.

Bright Winter is very bright, and its nearest color is Bright Cherry. Light Spring and Light Summer are very light, and their palettes hold nothing like maroon. Maroon is dark and mostly vivid, so it points the other way on those axes.

What stops a maroon from weighing on your face?

Put something lighter between the maroon and your skin. Cream or white both do the job. A cream T-shirt under a maroon cardigan does more for a face than the cardigan alone.

Check the shade, too. Barn Red is the darkest of the four, so it asks for the most light around it. Dark Red is the lightest, so it needs the least. Hold the fabric under your chin by a window and see whether your face stays in front or the garment takes over.

Away from the face, maroon relaxes. Pants, for instance, need no buffer.

The logic of any maroon outfit is one neutral and one accent. Let gray or navy carry the weight, then add one color that is not red. For a fourth look, try maroon pants, a tan knit and an olive jacket. Tan stays quiet, olive sits across the color wheel from red, and nothing competes.

Where does maroon go wrong, and what then if your palette has no place for it?

Two pairings fail. Maroon with burgundy, and maroon with brown. In both cases the tones are too close, so the two blur into one heavy block and neither shows. If you love the look of a deep red, pick one of them and let a lighter color do the contrast.

If your sub-season says “not for you”, maroon doesn’t have to leave your closet. It just moves away from your face. Wear it in a blazer or a cardigan only with a palette color between it and your skin. Warm Spring’s closest color is Poppy Red and Bright Winter’s is Bright Cherry. Those are stand-ins, not matches, so treat them as a direction you can test, not a promise.

If you aren’t sure which group you belong to, the free color analysis quiz gives you a starting point, not a verdict.

Questions

Maroon: your questions

Does maroon go with navy or white?

Yes to both. Navy is a calm, dark partner that lets maroon be the only red in the outfit. White does the opposite: it adds light and gives the maroon an edge. Use white nearest your face and navy lower down, where heaviness does no harm.

Which maroon shade should I try first?

Start with UP Maroon: it’s the version for Deep Autumn, Deep Winter and True Winter, while Dark Red belongs to Warm Autumn. Your skin’s reaction decides the rest. The free quiz shows you a likely sub-season to check. It’s a first hint, not a verdict.

Can I wear maroon if it isn’t in my palette?

Yes. Keep it away from your face and let a palette color sit near your skin. Maroon pants with a top from your own palette is a fair trade. For a Soft Autumn, the closest palette color on the card is Soft Eggplant, a stand-in for the top, not a match.

Can I mix maroon and burgundy in one outfit?

Not well. Their tones sit so close that they blur into a single heavy block. If you’re choosing between the two, the burgundy or maroon comparison sorts them sub-season by sub-season, so you can see which one your palette favors.

What do I wear with maroon when it is close to my palette?

Take the version of your sub-season and add the light color its palette pairs with it. For Warm Autumn, the neighbor Rust goes with Cream and Saffron. It is close, not an exact match.
