What makes a green olive?

Olive is a green with yellow underneath. Its shades are Olive, Olive Green, Olive Drab, Moss Green and Dark Olive Green, and they sit between yellow and yellow-green.

Most of them are medium in lightness and medium in intensity. Olive Drab is the exception: it is vivid. Olive Green is the lightest of the five, Dark Olive Green the deepest.

Near the face, olive reads as earthy and a little warm. It has body. It doesn’t fade into the skin, it frames it.

What makes a green sage?

Sage is a green with the volume turned down. Its shades are Sage Green, Sage, Laurel Green, Dark Sea Green and Artichoke Green. Four of the five are muted, and only Sage Green sits at medium intensity.

The lightness is different too. Sage, Laurel Green and Dark Sea Green are light, while Sage Green and Artichoke Green are medium. The hue also travels further: it runs from yellow through yellow-green to plain green.

On a face, sage looks calm. Its muted shades keep the color low, so it reads as a soft green near the face rather than a loud one.

Where do olive green and sage green differ, and where don’t they?

Start with what they share. At headline level they are about as light and as vivid as each other, and both sit in the yellow range. If you were hoping for one to be clearly darker, you won’t find it.

The gap is in the family of shades. Olive’s family has body, with medium and vivid versions. Sage’s family is mostly muted and mostly light. That is why sage can look washed next to a strong color, and olive can look heavy next to a pale one.

The second gap is hue. Olive stays yellow or yellow-green. Sage drifts toward true green in Dark Sea Green and Artichoke Green, and that cooler drift is what you notice on a sweater in daylight.

Dye moves a green. Fabric moves it. Light moves it most. Judge the cloth in your hand, not the photo.

Which sub-seasons wear olive green, sage green, both or neither?

Both is a group of one: Warm Autumn, where the Olive version matches the palette color Olive Green and Sage Green matches Lichen. It is very warm, medium in depth and rich, so both greens fit in.

Two sub-seasons take Sage Green only. Warm Spring has it in its palette next to Light Khaki. Olive is not for you there, and Light Khaki only stands in.

Soft Autumn is neutral to warm and very soft, which is why the muted green works: Sage Green sits next to Soft Moss. Olive is only a neighbor, close to Khaki.

Olive Green only: one, Deep Autumn. Olive is close to Bronze Green in its palette, and the dark, rich depth carries it. Sage is not for you here. Dark Mustard is the nearest palette color, and it only substitutes.

Eight sub-seasons take neither, among them the Springs that are light or bright. Light Summer reaches for Seafoam Green and Cool Summer for Soft Emerald. The three Winters look to Emerald, Bright Emerald for Bright Winter.

Soft Summer comes closest with Grayed Spruce for olive and Cool Sage for sage.

How do you test each one, and what goes with it?

Try them one at a time against a bare face by a window. If you want the full setup, the setup is in my guide to draping colors at home.

Olive likes warm company: cream, white, camel, mustard, burgundy and baby pink. Burgundy gives it depth. Baby pink softens it.

Sage works with cream, white, terracotta, dusty rose, chocolate and charcoal. Terracotta warms it. Charcoal quiets it.

Questions

Olive Green or Sage Green: your questions

Are olive green and sage green really different colors?

Yes, though less than you’d think. The two main shades match in lightness and intensity, and both sit in the yellow range.

The gap shows in the families: four of sage’s five shades are muted, and sage drifts toward true green. Side by side on one fabric, you see it quickly.

Which green is mine if my sub-season takes neither?

It depends on your sub-season. Warm Autumn takes both, Warm Spring and Soft Autumn take sage, and Deep Autumn takes olive. If yours takes neither, reach for the closest color of your palette instead. Hold each green near your face to check.

Can I put olive green and sage green in one outfit?

Yes, if both are in your palette. Warm Autumn is the only sub-season where they are. Elsewhere, wear one near your face and let the other go below the waist, or choose the stand-in from your palette.

What goes with olive green?

Burgundy gives olive depth, and camel or mustard keep it warm. Baby pink or cream lightens the look. Pick by the mood you want near your face.

What goes with sage green?

Terracotta and chocolate add warmth, dusty rose keeps it gentle, and charcoal makes it more serious. Cream or white lets the muted green stay the quiet center.

Why do olive and sage look different on my phone than in person?

A screen and store lights both change how a green looks. Lay the two real garments side by side by a window. The olive stays full and yellow. The sage goes softer and shifts toward green. That comparison tells you more than any photo.
