Color comparison
Taupe or beige? Two quiet neutrals. You’d think they could trade places. They can’t. Held near a face, they pull in different directions.

Beige is both lighter and more vivid; Taupe Gray has hardly any hue, Beige sits in the orange range.
Taupe Gray and Taupe are medium in lightness, nearly neutral, with no clear hue. Rose Taupe and Deep Taupe are muted and lean red.
From lightest to darkest, they run Taupe Gray, Taupe, Rose Taupe, Deep Taupe. All four sit at medium lightness, so the steps between them are small.
That’s the point of taupe. It doesn’t add a color to your face. The two nearly neutral shades stay out of the way, and the two red-leaning ones give a faint rosy tint.
Linen is very light and nearly neutral, with no clear hue. Wheat is very light, muted and orange. Desert Sand is very light, muted and red-orange.
Beige and Sand are light and muted, one orange, the other yellow.
From lightest to darkest: Linen, Wheat, Desert Sand, Beige, Sand.
Linen is the quiet exception. Every other shade leans toward orange or yellow, and that lean is what you see first. Near the skin, beige gives off a little of that color.
Four sub-seasons take taupe only: Light Summer, Cool Summer, Soft Summer and True Winter. Five take beige only: Light Spring, Warm Spring, Soft Autumn, Warm Autumn and Deep Autumn. Three take neither: Bright Spring, Deep Winter and Bright Winter.
The reason is the axes. Cool Summer is very cool, so taupe fits: Taupe Gray matches Cool Taupe in its palette. Beige is not for you there, and Soft White is the closest stand-in. Soft Summer has Taupe Gray matched with Taupe. Beige is only close, next to Pebble Gray.
Light Summer is slightly cool and very light, and taupe is only close there, next to Rosy Taupe. True Winter is the same story, with Steel Gray as the neighbor.
The Springs and Autumns reverse it. Light Spring holds Beige matched with Golden Beige, and taupe is not for you, with Warm Light Gray as a stand-in. Soft Autumn has Beige matched with Sand Beige, while taupe is only close, next to Warm Taupe. Warm Spring, Warm Autumn and Deep Autumn are only close on beige: Golden Ivory for the first, Cream for the other two.
The three “neither” sub-seasons are very bright or saturated, with high contrast. Quiet neutrals have little to answer back with there. Deep Winter stands in with Slate Gray for taupe and Pure White for beige. Bright Spring uses Light Gray for taupe and Camel for beige. Bright Winter uses Silver Gray for taupe and Light Pearl Gray for beige. Those are stand-ins, not matches.
Hold one fabric at a time under your chin, bare-faced, near daylight. The steps are in color draping at home.
Beige has plenty of partners. Navy and chocolate give it depth, white and baby pink keep it light, and olive and black round out the range.
For taupe, no partner is listed, so look for contrast instead. Taupe sits in the middle in lightness, so pair it with something clearly lighter or clearly deeper, or the whole outfit blurs.

Questions
Taupe has almost no hue, so it reads gray-brown. Beige leans orange, so it reads warm and sandy. Both are muted, which is why people mix them up. Near your face, the orange in beige shows first, and taupe stays calm.
Beige. Linen, Wheat and Desert Sand are very light, and Beige and Sand are light. All four taupes sit at medium lightness. Beige is also a little more vivid, though both stay muted.
It depends. Cool Summer and Soft Summer hold taupe in their palettes, while Light Summer and True Winter have a close neighbor. Light Spring and Soft Autumn hold beige. Warm Spring, Warm Autumn and Deep Autumn have a close one. The free quiz points you toward a sub-season, and a test near your face confirms it.
That depends on your sub-season. No sub-season takes both, so put the one your palette lists by your face. Further down, in pants or a bag, the stakes are lower. More neutral comparisons are in the color guides.
Navy, chocolate and black sit far below beige in lightness, so they draw the clearest line. Black is the sharpest of the three, so check it near your face first. White and baby pink stay closer to beige and feel softer.
Not fully. Beige shows a trace of orange and taupe stays near neutral, but a photo can flatten both. Backlight and filters nudge a color before you see it. Check the real fabric in daylight, held near your face.
