What is in the mauve family, and what separates its five shades?

Five shades, and they don’t agree on direction. Mauvelous is the lightest and leans pink-red. Opera Mauve leans pink-purple. Plain Mauve is the one that goes violet, and it is also the most intense of the five.

Then the family gets quieter and deeper. Mauve Taupe is muted and leans pink-red, and it is the least intense. Old Mauve is the darkest, also muted, also pink-red. From lightest to darkest the order runs Mauvelous, Opera Mauve, Mauve, Mauve Taupe, Old Mauve.

So the question isn’t only light or dark. It’s also how loud the color is, and whether it leans toward pink or toward violet. A color name is not one code. Dye, fabric and the bulb above you all shift it, so a swatch on a screen is only a starting point.

Which mauve belongs to which sub-season, and why?

Eight of the twelve carry a mauve, and they don’t all wear the same one.

The Summers are the natural home. Light Summer and Cool Summer both have Mauve itself in the palette. Light Summer is airy and gentle, Cool Summer is very cool, and the color holds in both. Soft Summer is grayed and very soft, so it takes Opera Mauve, matched with Heather Rose.

Light Spring is very light and fresh, so it wears Mauvelous, the lightest shade, matched with Warm Candy Pink.

The Autumns and Deep Winter go heavier and quieter.

Soft Autumn wears Mauve Taupe, matched with Smoky Plum. Warm Autumn, Deep Autumn and Deep Winter all wear Old Mauve, matched with Warm Eggplant, Dark Plum and Cool Burgundy in turn. Deep Autumn is dark and rich, so the darkest, most muted shade fits it.

Two sub-seasons are close. Warm Spring is very warm and bright, so only a neighbor of Mauve is in its palette: Warm Violet. Bright Spring is very bright, and a neighbor of Mauvelous is there: Flamingo Pink.

The last two are not for you. True Winter is saturated and high in contrast, while the mauve family is medium or muted in intensity. Its closest palette color is Magenta, a stand-in, not a match.

Where does mauve belong: under your chin or below your waist?

Start with the depth. Mauvelous lifts the face, while Old Mauve is heavy and can sit like a shadow under the chin. If the shade you own is the dark one, slip a lighter color between it and your skin: an ivory top or a light gray scarf does it.

Away from the face, the logic is simple. One neutral, one mauve, nothing else shouting. Charcoal and navy give mauve a dark base to stand on, and camel gives it a different backdrop.

To make your own look, take the olive from the partners and use it as the second color: an olive blazer over a mauve blouse, camel bag, nothing more. Check any new combination once by a window, with the fabric against your jaw. If your face looks flatter than the fabric, change the shade, not the outfit.

Which pairings spoil mauve, and what stands in when it isn’t yours?

Skip orange. Both colors are strong, and the eye can’t decide where to land. Skip lilac too. It sits so close to mauve in tone that the two blur into one soft, uncertain patch.

Two sub-seasons are not for mauve, and you aren’t banned from it. Wear it below the waist or in a bag, where it doesn’t touch your complexion.

Near the face, the closest palette color is only a stand-in, not a match. For True Winter that is Magenta, which goes with Pure White. For Bright Winter it is Bright Candy Pink, which goes with Black.

Bright Winter has a second reason to keep away. Mauve sits close to Dusty Rose, a color that sub-season avoids. The Bright Winter page shows its own palette.

Questions

Mauve: your questions

What colors go with mauve?

Pale neutrals like ivory and light gray soften mauve, dark ones like charcoal and navy give it weight, and olive gives it a richer backdrop. Pick one partner per outfit and let mauve be the accent.

Which mauve is mine?

Look at your sub-season, then at the shade. The free color analysis quiz takes ten questions and points to a likely season and a sub-season to test. Then hold Mauvelous, Mauve and Old Mauve fabrics near your face with your hair tied back, and watch whether your skin and eyes brighten or go gray.

Is mauve still an option when my palette lacks it?

Yes, away from your face. A skirt, pants or a bag in mauve costs your complexion nothing. Near the face, use the stand-in your sub-season suggests, or put a palette color between the mauve and your skin.

Why does Bright Winter struggle with mauve and dusty rose alike?

Mauve sits close to dusty rose, a color Bright Winter avoids, so that sub-season has no mauve of its own. Its closest palette color, Bright Candy Pink, is a stand-in. The mauve vs dusty rose page sets the two side by side.

How is mauve different from lavender or lilac?

They are neighbors, and lilac is close enough to mauve that the two blur when worn together. For lavender, the mauve vs lavender page sets the two side by side and shows which one each sub-season takes.
