What sits inside the turquoise family?

Turquoise lives between blue and green, and its shades pull in both directions.

Turquoise and Medium Turquoise are the lighter pair, both blue-green, both medium in intensity. Warm Turquoise is a step deeper, also blue-green. Cool Turquoise is the one that leans plainly blue.

From lightest to darkest, the order is Turquoise, Medium Turquoise, Cool Turquoise, Warm Turquoise. From most to least intense, it runs Turquoise, Medium Turquoise, Warm Turquoise, Cool Turquoise. So the quietest shade is also the bluest one.

A name on a tag is not one fixed color. Fabric, dye and light each move it, so judge the piece in your hand, not the label.

Which turquoise is yours: seven palettes keep it, four have a neighbor, one has none?

The answer follows the axes of each sub-season: temperature, lightness, intensity and contrast.

Light Spring wears Medium Turquoise, matched with Aqua. That fits a very light, fresh palette with low contrast. Bright Spring wears the same Medium Turquoise, matched with Bright Aqua, because its palette is very bright and its contrast high.

Then the names get tricky. Warm Spring is very warm, yet it wears Cool Turquoise, matched with Deep Turquoise in its palette. Don’t read a shade name as a temperature. It only names the closest turquoise to that palette.

Warm Autumn wears Warm Turquoise, matched with the shade of the same name. Cool Summer and True Winter, both very cool, wear Cool Turquoise. Soft Summer wears it too, matched with Grayed Turquoise, which suits a very soft, grayed palette.

Four sub-seasons have a neighbor. Light Summer has Pale Turquoise, Soft Autumn has Grayed Teal, Deep Winter has Deep Turquoise and Bright Winter has Bright Mint. Close isn’t the same as yours, so try the shade near your face before you commit.

Deep Autumn is the only one without it. This family runs light to medium, and Deep Autumn is dark and rich.

Look at the Light Spring and Warm Autumn pages to see how far apart two turquoise palettes can sit.

What goes between turquoise and your face?

Something quieter, in most cases. Turquoise is a color people see before they see you.

Put white or cream at the collar and the turquoise drops to the chest, where it frames you instead of fighting for the eye. Navy does the same job for sub-seasons that want a deeper anchor. A light gray top works when you want the turquoise on the outside, as a cardigan or a jacket.

The lighter shades are easier near the chin. Warm Turquoise carries more weight, so give it a neutral next to the skin and let it work lower.

The logic of an outfit is one neutral, one accent, and turquoise is the accent. For a fourth outfit, try a turquoise top over light gray pants with camel shoes. Coral works best in small amounts: a scarf, a bag, a belt.

What clashes with turquoise, and what does Deep Autumn wear instead?

Two pairings spoil it.

Teal is too close in tone. Next to each other, the two blur, and neither reads as a choice. Red is the opposite problem: two strong colors, each asking for the whole stage. If you love the idea of red with turquoise, keep it to a small accent and let the turquoise stay quiet.

Deep Autumn is the one sub-season where turquoise is not for you. The closest color in its palette is Deep Turquoise, a stand-in, not a match, and cream goes with it. Wear it as pants or a clutch, a little away from the face.

Placement is the lever. The turquoise that fights your face can sit quietly at the hem.

Questions

Turquoise: your questions

Does turquoise go with navy?

Yes. Navy gives turquoise a deep, steady base, so the pair reads as two blues instead of two loud colors. Put the navy in a blazer, the turquoise in a blouse, and let cream pants sit between them.

Which version of turquoise is mine?

It depends on your sub-season, as the sections above show. The free color analysis quiz takes ten questions with no sign-up, and it points to a likely season, plus a hint of the sub-season. After that, hold two shades near your face and see which one keeps your eyes in front.

Can I wear turquoise if it isn’t in my palette?

Yes, and placement does the work. Keep it at the hem, on pants or a clutch, and put a color you do wear at the collar. For Deep Autumn, the Deep Turquoise of its palette is the stand-in to try first.

Is turquoise the same as teal?

Not quite, though they sit close enough to confuse. Worn together they blur into one tone, which is why teal is on the list of pairings to skip. The teal vs turquoise guide sets them side by side, and the color guides cover other pairs.
