What Colors Go With Royal Blue? Pairings for Each Sub-Season

“Blue is blue.” Hold royal blue up to a face. It wakes the skin up. Or it takes over the whole picture.

What do Royal Blue, Egyptian Blue and Royal Blue (Dark) each do?

Three blues share the name here: Royal Blue, Egyptian Blue and Royal Blue (Dark). All three are plain blue in hue, with no green or purple in them. They differ in how dark they are and how loudly they speak.

Royal Blue sits at medium lightness and is vivid. Egyptian Blue is darker and just as vivid, the most intense of the three. Royal Blue (Dark) is very dark and only medium in intensity, so it speaks lower.

By lightness the line runs Royal Blue, Egyptian Blue, Royal Blue (Dark). By intensity it runs Egyptian Blue, Royal Blue, Royal Blue (Dark). The darkest one is not the loudest.

A color name isn’t a single code. Dye, fabric and light all move a blue, so judge the cloth, not the label. If cobalt is the other name on your mind, the cobalt or royal blue comparison sorts the two by sub-season.

Four palettes hold Royal Blue and six turn it away: what sets them apart?

Each palette matches the blue to its own strength, and the axes explain the pull.

Start with the four palettes that hold it. Deep Winter wears Egyptian Blue, matched with Royal Blue. True Winter wears Egyptian Blue too, matched with Sapphire. Bright Spring and Bright Winter wear Royal Blue (Dark), matched with Bright Navy and Navy.

Deep Winter and True Winter carry dark, saturated color well, and a vivid Egyptian Blue keeps pace with their strong contrast. Bright Spring and Bright Winter are very bright at medium depth, with high or very high contrast.

Two others hold only a neighbor of it. For Warm Spring, that neighbor is Warm Periwinkle. For Cool Summer, it is Denim Blue. Royal Blue itself is in neither palette, and a neighbor isn’t a twin.

Six aren’t for you. Light Spring and Light Summer sit very light with low contrast, and their palettes run lighter than this blue. Soft Summer is very soft and grayed, and its palette has no vivid blue, only a stand-in named below.

Warm Autumn is very warm and slightly muted, so its closest color is Petrol Blue. Deep Autumn is dark and intense, and its closest is Dark Petrol Blue. Both are stand-ins, not matches. Soft Autumn goes further: royal blue sits close to Electric Blue, which that sub-season avoids.

How do you wear Royal Blue so it doesn’t outshout your face?

My advice: start with the shade. A vivid blue at the collar pulls the eye to the cloth. The very dark one recedes and lets the face lead.

Then put a lighter layer between blue and skin. White, cream or light gray in a shirt or a top under a blazer does that job. The blue frames you instead of competing.

For the base, keep one neutral. Cream pants or charcoal pants carry a royal blue sweater without a fuss. Gold stays small: a clutch is plenty.

To build your own outfit, pick one royal blue piece, one neutral and one small accent. A royal blue blazer, a white shirt, cream pants. Change one of the three and you’ve got a new look.

Lower down, the rules loosen. Royal blue below the waist asks very little of your complexion.

What breaks Royal Blue, and what do the six without it reach for?

Two pairings to skip. Navy is too close in tone: the two blues blur into one dark mass, and neither reads. Red is the opposite problem. Two strong colors fight for the same spot, and the eye bounces between them.

If yours is “not for you,” don’t force the blue near your chin. Reach for the closest color of your palette. It stands in for the blue; it doesn’t copy it. Light Spring has Light Cornflower, Light Summer has Soft Navy and Soft Summer has Slate Blue.

Warm Autumn has Petrol Blue. Deep Autumn has Dark Petrol Blue. Soft Autumn has Warm Denim, which sits well with cream.

Royal blue can still live in your closet. Put it below the waist or in an accessory, and keep the stand-in near your face. A palette is a compass, and sometimes the occasion wins. If you love the blue, wear it with a light layer in between.

The color guides cover the other colors the same way.

Questions

Royal Blue: your questions

Is royal blue the same as navy?

No, and putting them side by side is a trap. The two sit so near in tone that they blur into one dark block, and neither gets to speak. The royal blue or navy comparison shows which one suits each sub-season, so you can choose one instead.

Does royal blue go with black?

Yes. A pair of black heels gives royal blue a firm base, and light gray in between eases the join. Near the face, let the blue take the spot and keep the black lower, where it frames the outfit instead of crowding it.

Which version of royal blue is mine?

Check your sub-season first: a Winter or Bright Spring will find it in the palette, a Warm Spring or Cool Summer a neighbor. If you don’t know yours, the free quiz hands you a likely season plus a sub-season hint. It’s a first hint, not a verdict: it can’t watch your skin react to color.

Can I wear royal blue if it isn’t my color?

Yes, as long as it stays low, away from your face. Below the waist, royal blue leaves your complexion alone. Near the chin, use your stand-in color, or a light layer of white, cream or light gray, between the blue and your skin.

What do I wear with a royal blue sweater?

Pick one neutral for the base and one light layer for the neckline. Cream pants work for the neutral, and a white or cream top showing at the collar is the light layer. Then stop: the blue stays the one strong note, and everything else just backs it up.
