Light Summer vs Soft Summer: The Three Differences That Matter
“They’re both soft, cool Summers, so it doesn’t matter which one I am.” It does. One leads with lightness. The other leads with gray. Same season, different job.

Light Summer starts with how light the color is
Light Summer is very light, slightly cool and soft, with low contrast between your hair, eyes and skin. Lightness leads.
The Light Summer palette is the pastel end of Summer: Powder Pink, Lavender, Sky Blue, Pale Aqua. Nothing in it is heavy, and nothing is dusty.
Your colors have a pink or bluish base, and they work as fresh, light versions of themselves. Black and dark brown look harsh on you. Orange and mustard drain you.
Soft Summer starts with how gray the color is
Soft Summer is neutral to cool, medium in depth, very soft and grayed, again with low contrast. Softness leads.
The Soft Summer palette has gray mixed into every color: Dusty Rose, Gray Blue, Cool Sage, Soft Plum. It is quiet by design, and it isn’t pale.
Picture a beach at the end of the day: pebbles, driftwood, heather. Put a loud color near your face and it takes over the picture.
Dress in shades close to each other, a Dove Gray with a Dusty Rose, and your face stays in front. Gray, the color many people call sad, is a friend here.
Your skin sits close to neutral, so you may find yourself torn between gold and silver.
Three axes split Light Summer and Soft Summer, and one does not
Lightness is how light or deep a color is. Intensity is how clean or how grayed it is. Here they are, in the order your eye notices them.
Lightness comes first. Light Summer is very light, Soft Summer is medium. On a Light Summer, watch for a medium-depth color that starts to weigh on the face. On a Soft Summer, watch for a very pale color that leaves you looking faded.
Intensity comes second. Both are soft, but Soft Summer is very soft and grayed. Light Summer’s colors are pale and fresh. Soft Summer’s carry gray in them.
Temperature is the quietest. Light Summer is slightly cool. Soft Summer sits closer to neutral, which is why gold and silver can both tempt you.
For Light Summer, the palette points toward silver and white gold. Treat that as a direction and check it against your skin: watch whether a metal keeps it rosy or turns it yellow.
What they share is just as useful. Contrast is low for both, so neither of you needs sharp black-and-white. And black is on both avoid lists.
The two-color test. In daylight, with no makeup, hold a piece of fabric in each of these two colors up to your face. Rest your eyes between the two and redo it another day. If the same color keeps winning, you have a direction: a first hint, not a verdict.
What do Powder Pink and Dusty Rose show on your face?
The setup (daylight, bare face, hair covered, one fabric at a time) is in color draping at home. Here, only these two pinks matter.
Start with Powder Pink, then switch to Dusty Rose. Read lightness first. Does your face stay present, or does the fabric take over?
If Powder Pink brightens your complexion and Dusty Rose feels heavy, you lean Light Summer. If Dusty Rose settles in and Powder Pink looks thin beside your skin, you lean Soft Summer.
Then read the skin. Does either pink send it toward yellow, or toward gray? Contrast is low for both, so your features won’t be the clue here. Lightness and gray will.
Swap the order and try again, ideally on another day. If one pink wins again and again, that is the trait to protect: lightness or haze. It points; it does not decide.
Can a Light Summer borrow from Soft Summer, or the reverse?
Yes, because they are the same family. They are not neighbors in the method: Light Summer’s neighbor is Light Spring, and Soft Summer’s is Soft Autumn. Both are cool Summers with low contrast.
So an in-between face is not a different season. It is a Summer with one trait louder than the other. Decide which one you can’t give up: the lightness or the haze. That one leads.
Then try, one shade at a time. Some names echo each other across the two palettes: Light Raspberry and Muted Raspberry, Mauve and Grayed Mauve, Soft Navy and Grayed Navy, Pearl Gray and Dove Gray. Try the neighboring shade and watch your skin.
My advice: test one swap, not the whole palette.
A quiz or an app can name a likely season. It never watches your skin respond. Start with the free color analysis quiz for a direction, then test the pair yourself. I would rather you test than assume.
Do lips, eyes and jewelry tell Light Summer from Soft Summer?
A little, mostly through finish. Light Summer’s lips are fresh pink, light raspberry and rosewood, in sheer formulas. Soft Summer’s are rosewood, dusty rose and muted raspberry, in satin.
On the eyes, Light Summer has light gray, rosy taupe, lavender and soft blue. Soft Summer has taupe, gray-brown, soft plum and verdigris, with a smudged line rather than a graphic one.
Silver and white gold show up on both lists. Light Summer adds very pale rose gold, pearls and moonstone. Soft Summer adds rose gold, kept matte or satin. Try each against your skin before you buy.

Questions
Light Summer or Soft Summer: your questions
How do I tell Light Summer from Soft Summer?
Ask what leads. Light Summer leads with lightness, so pale, fresh colors lift you. Soft Summer leads with softness, so grayed, hazy colors settle into your face. If you cannot choose, compare Powder Pink and Dusty Rose in daylight and note which one you see second, after your face.
Can I be both Light Summer and Soft Summer?
You can sit close to both, but your palette will still lean one way. Pick the side whose colors keep making you look rested, then try a neighboring shade from the other side and watch your skin.
Does hair color or gray hair decide between them?
No. Light Summer’s hair shades are light ash blonde, beige blonde and cool light brown. Soft Summer’s are ash brown, ash dark blonde and soft brown.
Dye and gray both change what the hair shows. So cover it, and read the skin and eyes instead.
Which metals suit Light Summer and Soft Summer?
Light Summer leans on silver, white gold and very pale rose gold, with pearls and moonstone. Soft Summer’s list is brushed silver, rose gold and white gold, kept matte or satin. If you hesitate between gold and silver, try both against your skin.
What do Light Summer and Soft Summer both avoid?
Black is on both lists, and so is orange: Orange for Light Summer, Bright Orange for Soft Summer. Light Summer’s list adds mustard and warm brown, too dark or too warm, which turn the skin yellow. Soft Summer’s adds bright yellow and electric fuchsia, too saturated or sharp for the softness of the face.
