The three most common mistakes

  1. Wearing camel “because it’s a classic.” On you, it turns your skin yellow. Your classic is navy or gray.
  2. Choosing an orange-leaning red: your red is raspberry or cherry.
  3. Warming up your hair with gold or copper. Ash tones suit you better.

Where does a Cool Summer wardrobe start, and where does it end?

Start with the three pieces that sit closest to your face and carry everything else: the Navy coat, the Medium Gray blazer and the Soft White shirt. They’re quiet. They’re also where you reach for what other people reach for in black.

Add the lower half next. The dark jeans and the Cool Taupe pants give every top something calm to stand on. With those five, you already have outfits before a single bright color shows up.

Color comes last, and it should. The Raspberry sweater is your signature, so it goes under the coat or over the white shirt.

The Cool Sky Blue T-shirt is the lighter, easier note. The Light Plum dress is the dressed-up piece, and the Navy coat sits over it without a fight.

How do you dress for the office, the weekend or dinner as a Cool Summer?

Think in three slots: one neutral, one color, one accent.

At the office, Navy and Soft White are the neutrals, Denim Blue is the color, and the Raspberry scarf is the accent, placed next to your face on purpose. Navy and Soft White do the quiet work. Try the scarf next to your face and watch your skin.

On the weekend, dark jeans and a Medium Gray jacket are the neutrals. The Cool Lavender sweater is the only color. Skip the accent. Lavender and gray are both quiet, and that’s the whole idea.

For an evening out, the dress is the color: Raspberry or Light Plum. Silver is the accent, at your ears or your wrist. Silver, white gold and platinum are the direction for your coloring, so check the metal near your face. Echo the dress with a cool red on your lips; the Cool Summer makeup page lists the lip, eye and blush shades.

Two more formulas you can build from what you own:

  • Navy coat over a Raspberry sweater, with Cool Taupe pants. It’s your strongest pairing, and the taupe keeps the rest calm.
  • Medium Gray blazer, Soft White shirt and a Pink scarf. Pink is the only color, so the look stays soft.

What replaces black and beige in a Cool Summer closet?

Navy replaces black. It suits you, so give it the heavy job: the coat. Black is too harsh near your face.

Medium Gray comes second. It’s the blazer, and the shade to reach for when Navy feels too dark.

Cool Taupe replaces beige. It’s the pants. Shoes or a bag in the same tone are an option.

Camel is the trap here. It feels like a classic, and on you it turns the skin yellow. Golden beige does the same. Your classics are navy and gray.

Soft White is for whatever touches your neck: shirts, fine knits, a tee under a blazer. It keeps the face clear and the outfit cool.

Can a Cool Summer wear orange, golden yellow, terracotta or black?

Yes, with distance. No color is banned. The question is how close it sits to your face.

Orange, Golden Yellow and Terracotta are too warm for your cool undertone, the tone under the surface of your skin. Orange-leaning colors muddy your complexion, so keep them away from your collar.

A Terracotta skirt, a Golden Yellow bag or orange sneakers sit far enough down that your face stays out of the argument.

Black stays a pants-or-shoes color. Put a Raspberry, Soft White or Cool Sky Blue top between it and your chin.

One more trap: the orange-leaning red. Your reds lean raspberry and cherry. If a red looks fiery on the hanger, it will look fiery on you.

How do you shop for Cool Summer prints, fabrics and almost-right colors?

Look for classic prints with blended edges: Navy stripes, Gray glen plaid, florals in cool tones. Choose matte fabrics: cotton, fine wool, crepe, denim. Those are the fabrics that suit you, so a Raspberry knit in fine wool or cotton is a good place to start.

Shop in pairs. Take a new piece and ask what it meets in your closet. Navy with Raspberry. Denim Blue with Cool Lavender. If it has no partner, it stays on the rack.

When a color is almost right, say a gray that drifts warm, move it away from your face. It can become pants, a skirt or a bag. Keep your Cool Summer palette on your phone and check each fabric next to your bare skin, in daylight.

Questions

Cool Summer outfits: your questions

What do I wear instead of black as a Cool Summer?

Navy. It gives you depth without the harshness of black, so it takes the heavy job: the coat. Medium Gray covers the days when Navy feels too dark, and Soft White keeps whatever touches your neck light.

Which jeans work for a Cool Summer?

Dark jeans. They’re in your capsule, and denim is one of the matte fabrics that suit you. Wear them with the Raspberry sweater for a dressier look, or a Cool Lavender one with the Medium Gray jacket. Hold each top near your face and watch your skin.

How many pieces make a Cool Summer capsule wardrobe?

Eight is enough to start. Choose pieces that each work with at least two others from your palette, then add only what you find yourself missing. A capsule is built on how the pieces combine, not on a number. Test each new piece against the ones you already own.

How do I know I’m a Cool Summer and not a True Winter?

Try a softened Raspberry against a pure Fuchsia near your bare face. If the Fuchsia overpowers you and the Raspberry works with you, you may lean Cool Summer. True Winter carries more contrast and more saturation. The Cool Summer and True Winter comparison walks through the drape test, and a trained eye gives the full read.

Does going gray change my Cool Summer wardrobe?

Your season is read on your skin and eyes with the hair covered, so gray strands are not what decides it. Gray or white hair looks naturally good on a Cool Summer, and Navy and Medium Gray sit easily beside it. The Cool Summer hair color page covers natural and dyed shades, gray hair and what to tell a colorist.
