Cool Summer Makeup: Raspberry Lips, Soft Eyes, Cool Pink Cheeks

People say Summer makeup is pastel and shy. Look at a Cool Summer face. Very cool. Moderate contrast. A raspberry lip that holds its own.

What does a raspberry lip do for a Cool Summer face?

Start with Raspberry. It’s your signature color, and on the lips it gives you a healthy glow. Blue-toned pink is the softer day option. Soft cherry is your red.

Your red is a cool red. A red with orange in it muddies your complexion, and the lips are the first place you see it.

Your intensity is soft to medium and your contrast is moderate. Choose a finish that lets the color sit in the lips instead of shouting: satin or sheer, built up in thin layers, blurred at the edges.

Your neighbor True Winter is more saturated and higher in contrast, which is where a sharper lip starts to make sense.

Stop at the shade where you still see your face before you see the lipstick. Every shade here comes from the Cool Summer palette.

Which eye colors keep Cool Summer soft but defined?

Gray, cool taupe, plum and navy. All four are cool and none is loud, which is your balance.

Begin with gray or cool taupe across the lid. Bring in plum when you want the eyes to carry more, for an evening or next to a raspberry lip. Navy is another one to try.

For mascara, choose charcoal or a soft black. Let the liner follow the same logic: charcoal or navy, smudged a little, rather than a sharp jet-black line.

Moderate contrast means your eyes can take definition. They don’t need a dramatic wing to get it.

How much cool pink does a Cool Summer cheek need?

Cool pink, and a little less than you think. The goal is a cheek that looks flushed, not painted.

Place it on the apples and blend upward until you can’t find the edge. If you want more, add a second thin layer rather than a heavier first one.

Bronzer is optional. If you use one, it follows your temperature, and yours is very cool. Keep it cool-toned, since orange, golden and terracotta sit on your avoid list. Swipe a little on your cheek first.

If it looks warm there, skip it. A pink that matches your lip does more for you.

Does a Cool Summer need a cool foundation?

Choose a base for your skin, not for your palette. Along the jaw, by a window, the right shade is the one that disappears.

Then there’s undertone, and it’s the tone under the surface of your skin. Yours is very cool, so see whether the base leans strongly golden beside your jaw, and trust what you see.

Softness matters too. With soft-to-medium intensity, an even, light-handed base lets the lips and eyes carry the color.

Depth of skin doesn’t decide this. Fair, olive, tan and deep complexions all show up in Cool Summer. What they share is the coloring as a whole: very cool, soft to medium, moderate in contrast.

Not sure that’s you? Ten questions in the free color analysis quiz give a likely season and a sub-season hint to check against your own face.

Which nails and metals follow Cool Summer makeup?

Nails are the easy part. Echo your lip with Raspberry, or pick another shade from your palette: Light Plum, Soft Cherry, Cool Lavender or Gray Blue. Let the nail color follow the lip or the outfit of the day.

Metals lean toward silver, white gold and platinum. Gray pearls, amethyst and aquamarine stay in the same family.

That’s a lean, and your own skin has the last word.

Which colors does Cool Summer makeup skip, and is black one of them?

Orange, golden yellow, terracotta and black. They’re too warm or too harsh, and they clash with your cool undertone.

In makeup that points away from orange-leaning coral on the lips, golden shimmer on the lids and terracotta blush. The same logic keeps your hair cool, too: see the Cool Summer hair color page.

Black is the neutral on your avoid list, especially close to the face. Step down to charcoal or a soft black for mascara and liner, and keep the rest of the face gentle so one dark line doesn’t take over.

If a warm color matters for a reason of your own, my advice is to wear it on your clothes, away from your face.

Questions

Cool Summer makeup: your questions

Is silver or gold better for Cool Summer?

Silver, white gold and platinum point the right way for Cool Summer, as a lean rather than a law. If you love a gold piece, hold it beside a silver one by a window and see which leaves your complexion clearer.

Which lipstick colors suit Cool Summer?

Raspberry, blue-toned pink and soft cherry. Start with raspberry, and keep any red on the cool side, since orange-leaning shades are on your avoid list. If a lipstick feels too strong, tap it on with a fingertip so the edge softens.

Can Cool Summer wear black eyeliner?

A little, if you like it. Black is on your avoid list, so the question is how much and where. A thin navy or charcoal line along the lashes gives the eye its definition with a softer edge, and a full black wing is the version to skip.

Is it Cool Summer, Soft Summer or True Winter?

Look at softness and contrast. Soft Summer is more grayed and lower in contrast, True Winter more saturated and higher in contrast. Cool Summer sits between them: very cool, soft to medium, moderate contrast. Two comparison pages cover the pairs, Cool Summer against True Winter and Cool Summer against Soft Summer, each with its drape test.
